Scout— Park planning app

PROBLEM & OPPORTUNITY

Embarking on a national park journey can be as exciting as it is intimidating, with many potential park-goers struggling to turn their aspirations into reality.

Scout simplifies the process by guiding users step-by-step, offering planning tools, and rewarding them with badges for completing milestones, making the entire journey more engaging and stress-free.

01 Getting Started

When the user first opens the app, they will be greeted with an short introduction and onboarding questions for better optimization of plan curations for the user. Using engaging graphics and motion to excite the user and introduce them to some of our iconography.

02 Scouting Our Next Adventure

The explore page offers a unique browsing experience that consists of engaging visual plan cards and icons that represents the variety of parks, activities, and gear items. The user can navigate through pages that inform them about the park and plans within the park. Using charts and maps and offering all the essential information to properly inform without being overwhelming.

03 Planning and Scheduling

After reviewing the hike plans and details, the user can customize their schedule by selecting their desired date, time, and activities they wish to do during the hike plan. The scheduled plan will then be available in the "My Plans" page shown in the navigation bar.

04 Completing Preparation Tasks

As the scheduled hike approaches, Scout will notify the user of preparation tasks that need to be completed before embarking on their adventure. Providing details about the hike that is accessible along with a visual preparation guide, relieves stress from the user.

05 Reflection and Achievements

After the hike was completed, Scout will congratulate the user and encourage them to reflect on their experience. Additionally, the app will award the user with badges specific to their experience that they can collect on their profile page. Using exciting animations and engaging badge illustrations will encourage further explorations.

How might we make planning national park adventures more accessible, engaging, and stress-free for aspiring park-goers?

Market Research

We analyzed competitors by tearing down the information architecture on existing apps and develop a user journey map to identify key audiences, user pain points, and opportunities for improvements.

Insights

» External knowledge was required in order to navigate the app, such as knowledge of the landscape of the parks and the types of activities are typically offered there.

» Having to keep track of locations, activities, stays, and scheduling all in different apps is difficult.

» Overwhelming with information that a beginner could have difficulty understanding what details are important for their specific needs.

User Testing

After a series of wireframes and iterations, we asked a couple of participants to go through each task and these are some of our key takeaways:

» Certain elements required better affordances.

» For users convenience, including more information on cards to improve the browsing experience.

» Progressing through a task could be more intuitive and not visually overwhelming.
